Hutton Cricket Club Friendly XI v Rain Men on Sun 10 Jul 2011 at 2.00pm

Match report Another enthralling game, and another frustrating near-miss. Hutton are the home team of Jim Lynch, who has played for us a handful of times (introduced by Andy Robson), providing high quality chirp behind the stumps and taking catches no one else would have got. His club is large and thriving, and with two substantial pitches nestling into the countryside just outside Brentwood. When we arrived,Simon Rose was already in the nets, pulverising the bowling of local adolescents. (He had some coaching midweek and was feeling more confident than for ages.) After a vast and delicious chicken curry (laid on for us especially), our skipper Alan White chose to field, and although their openers put on 72, wickets then fell regularly. Tim Cooper had his best figures of the season, three for 17 off seven, Francis Peckham took two for 35 and we held on to five more catches, which makes 12 in two games. Neil Pool and Matt Odwell took two each and I held on to one at slip, if only just. Hutton declared on 175 for 7, having decided on this figure beforehand to make an interesting game of it.They judged it perfectly. Neil and Ivan Polancec started promisingly, until Ivan suffered another unfortunate dismissal, hitting a forward defensive with soft hands and seeing the ball spin back and hit the stumps. I then gave Neil out lbw for 34: he was appalled but I was sure it was out (it was the first one I have given since 2009). Alan Do-Jo made 25 before becoming the first of three Rain Men to be run out; Simon Rose came in at number four and scored 1; and Alan White (14) looked as though he was going to win it by himself until he missed one. Francis Peckham (42) and Andy Robson (25*), the latter batting at number 9, took us from 117 for 7 to 153 for 8, but after Sam Craft recorded his 29th duck, Andy and I were left just under four overs in which to score 15. Unfortunately it was dark, the opening bowlers were back, and I was crap. We survived, but could not score the runs. The first win feels as far away as ever. But do not despair, Rain Men, for this is nothing compared to our worst run, over the last half of 2005 and the first half of 2006, when we lost 16 games in a row. That was true misery.
Statistical notes: on 4 not out, Francis passed 600 runs for Rain Men. Matt Odwell took his 25th catch (he is second only to Neal Ransome, 37). Andy Robson reached 20 wickets for the season, for the third successive year (no one else has done it more than once), and Tim Cooper reached ten wickets for the season for the fifth time. And the best ninth wicket partnership of the season went up from 1* to 8. We can always find something to celebrate.
